Background

Anatomy department Bayero University Kano is one of the pioneer departments in the defunct Faculty of Medicine which started in 1985. It is the key department that started with only 2 lecturers and 2 cadavers: with 17 pioneer medical students. The then head of department (in 1991), Professor P.L. Shukla, summoned all the Anatomists in Nigeria to come to Kano for the 1st Anatomy National meeting in that year. That was when the Anatomical Society of Nigeria (ASN), and the ASOBUK (Anatomical Society, Bayero University Kano) were formed. The department is therefore proud to be the mother of ASN and all the Anatomical Students’ Societies of Nigeria (ASSON).

Prof. Anas Ibrahim Yahaya, the first Professor of Anatomy from Kano State was among the medical students in 1991 who assisted the department in organizing that 1st Anatomy National meeting as well as the formation of the ASN.  The department also hosted the 8th ASN National Conference in 2010, and Prof Anas Ibrahim Yahaya was the then Secretary Local Organizing Committee of the Conference.
