About The Faculty

The approval given by the Senate of Bayero University to change the status of Faculty of Medicine (established in 1985) to that of College of Health Sciences, led to the emergence of four (4) Faculties in the College. The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences is one of these Faculties. The Faculty has three Departments: - Anatomy, Biochemistry and Human Physiology. The three Departments offer courses leading to the award of B.Sc., M.Sc., PGD and Ph.D. degrees. The Department of Biochemistry offers B.Sc. Nutrition and Dietetics and M.Sc. Biotechnology in conjunction with the Centre for Biotechnology Research. Each Department is housed in its complex with their own lecture rooms, PG classes and research laboratories with capacities ranging from 30 to 200. There are additional two theatres that are not housed in any of the Department’s complexes but are still belonging to the Faculty. A 500 Seater (Professor Muhammad Sani Zahradeen Theatre) dedicated to teaching of students from the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences and Twin-Theatre. The Dean’s Office is temporarily located in the Biochemistry Complex (Prof. Hafiz Abubakar Building).Philosophy: The philosophical foundation of the Faculty is to provide a platform that enable graduates to function as medical, basic and biomedical scientists.

The objectives of the Faculty are:

1 To engage students in learning (a) critical thinking, (b) application of scientific methods/analysis,

(c) Fundamental basic science principles, (d) accurate writing and clear verbal communication skills and (e) intensive experimental activities.

2 To advance the understanding of the living world and strives to improve it through better medical care, better disease prevention measures, better nutrition and promotion of better environmentally friendly and sustainable agricultural and manufacturing practices.

3 To enhance general understanding of biomedicines and sciences in general to the public via presentation and publications.

4 To generate a conducive learning and working environment that is defined by mutual respect, personal responsibility, fairness, equality and support for all.
