The Department of Biochemistry was established in the Faculty of Medicine along with other basic medical science courses in 1986 with the sole aim of serving the MBBS programme. In 1990, the University Senate approved the commencement of the B. Sc. Biochemistry programme. The programme started with 23 students, who were admitted during the 1991/1992 academic session. The first set of students graduated in the 1994/1995 session. During then 2001/2002 session, the department was moved to the Faculty of Science. However, when the University established the College of Health Sciences in 2013/2014, the Department was moved to the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. Due to the positive mission and vision of the department, the idea of starting B Sc. Nutrition and Dietetics programme was conceived. The programme started with thirty-nine (39) students admitted in the 2013/2014 academic session; the first set graduated in the 2017/2018 session. Postgraduate studies commenced in the Department in 2002/2003 with the mounting of the M. Sc. Biochemistry programme and two years later, in 2005/2006 session, Ph.D. Biochemistry. In the 2014/2015 session, the M. Sc.Biotechnology programme in collaboration with the University’s Centre for Biotechnology Research was mounted. The 2018/2019 session saw the expansion of the M. Sc. Biochemistry programme in the Department offering specializations in Environmental, Industrial, Medical, Nutrition and Toxicology. In the same year, postgraduate diploma programmes in Biotechnology, Medical Biochemistry and Human Nutrition were established in the Department. The Department, in collaboration with the African Center of Excellence in Population Health and Policy, in the 2019/2020 session, commenced the M. Sc. Public Health Nutrition and Policy programme. Currently, the Department has 33 full-time academic staff, 22 laboratory staff and 10 administrative staff. The Department is housed in the Hafiz Abubakar Building, a complex equipped with lecture rooms, a lecture theatre, e-library, laboratories, meeting rooms and staff offices.
